    Sir Brian Harold May (born 19 July 1947) is an English musician, songwriter, record producer, animal welfare activist and astrophysicist. He achieved worldwide fame as the lead guitarist and backing vocalist of the rock band Queen, which he co-founded with singer Freddie Mercury and drummer Roger Taylor. His guitar work and songwriting contributions helped Queen become one of the most successful acts in music history.

    May previously performed with Taylor in the progressive rock band Smile, which he had joined while he was at university. After Mercury joined to form Queen in 1970, bass guitarist John Deacon completed the line-up in 1971. They became one of the biggest rock bands in the world with the success of the album A Night at the Opera and its single "Bohemian Rhapsody". From the mid-1970s until 1986, Queen played at some of the biggest venues in the world, including an acclaimed performance at Live Aid in 1985.[4] As a member of Queen, May became regarded as a virtuoso musician and was identified with a distinctive sound created through

    In 1983 Brian had flown out to Los Angeles and met with some friends he had played some music with, including Eddie Van Halen at the Record Plant. The result was a rather lengthy jam session which they recorded and used ideas from to produce the "Star Fleet Project" album.

    Queen went back into the studio in late 1983 to work on their next album, this time they decided to record it in the United States. The result was the release of "The Works" in 1984. In October of that year the band embarked upon their first tour of Africa to sell out audiences everywhere.

    In 1985 Queen went back to South America and filmed their concert video titled "Rock in Rio". This was the biggest rock festival ever held anywhere in the world at the time and Queen was the headlining act. Queen played the Live Aid festival on July 13 th , 1985 at Wembley Stadium. They were just one of a multitude of bands that played, however the audiences and critics alike all thought Queen was the best act of the festival.
