Thomas Albert Wilson (August 1, 1931 – September 16, 2011),[2][3][4] was an American cartoonist. Wilson was the creator of the comic strip Ziggy, which he drew from 1971 to 1987. The strip was then continued by his son, Tom Wilson Jr.[5]
After growing up in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, Wilson served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955.[1][6] He attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, graduating in 1955.[1] He was a Cooper Union art instructor from 1961 to 1962.[1][6]
Wilson's career began in 1950, doing advertisement layouts for Uniontown Newspapers, Inc.[1][6] In 1955, he joined American Greetings (AG) as a designer, becoming Creative Director in 1957 and vice

Wilson, who died Friday, Sept. 16, helped launch beloved characters at American Greetings, especially his own Ziggy, who struggles gamely with temperamental toasters, slippery ice cream cones and an undependable world.
The artist spent most of his career in Greater Cleveland and moved a few years ago to a nursing home in Cincinnati, near family. He died in his sleep from pneumonia at age 80.
"Tom leaves behind a wonderful legacy in Ziggy, a hard-luck comics page hero who serves as a reflection of Tom's endearing wit and optimism in the face of adversity," John McMeel, head of Andrews McMeel Universal, whose Universal Uclick syndicates Wilson's daily panel, said in a statement.
The bald, round-faced Ziggy, exactly half his creator's age, appears in more than 500 newspapers, plus books, calendars and greeting cards. In 1982, he starred in "Ziggy's Gift," an ABC-TV Christmas special. Wilson made more than 1,200 drawings and shared in an Emmy award for best animated special.
