The trilogy was not publ. before 1955 because of censorship as it did not quite conform to the rigid requirements of the soc-realism (socialist realism). 2. Not yet entirely transl. into English. Only Szpital Przemienienia was transl. as Hospital of the Transfiguration by William Brand (San Diego: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1988). (1993 p. 317) and John Rothfork in Vinson & Kirkpatrick Contemporary Foreign Language Writers (1984 p. 215) transl. Czas nieutracony as Time not Wasted, while Darko Suvin in Clute & Nicholls The Encyclopedia of SF (1993 p. 710) transl. Polish title as Time Saved (note that the latter is a rather poor transl.). Other English version of the title is Unforfeited Time in Czerwiński"s Dictionary of Polish Literature (1994). F. Rottensteiner in Bryfonski"s Contemporary Authors -Autobiography Series (1984 p. 265) translated Szpital Przemienienia as Hospital of the Blessed -it is again an inaccurate transl. Sad to say that I did not like this. It might have been the victim of high expectations--Solaris is in the running for my favorite book in the last...5 years? But I found the stories much more Buck Rogers pulpy than I expected. Or the more apt comparison is Mad Magazine spy vs spy stories. In most of the stories, a robot constructor is trying to one-up his friend/rival robot constructor by creating some novel robot. The rival then tries to foil the plans of the original constructor, and some slapstick hijinks ensue. Lots of mathematical and cybernet terminology is thrown around, but is simple jargon used to dress up the stories. The underlying ideas or concepts are not crucial to the stories (it didn't help that I was also re-reading "Exhalation" while reading this book). At risk of making too many comparisons, the stories thus come off as something like the "I, Robot" series but without the unifying theme of exploring why the 3 laws of robotics don't work well.

As other reviewers note, though, the translation is really impressive. The stories are filled with wordplay, lengthy poems, and jokes. Too bad that the stories themselves left me so cold.
