George William Frederick was born in London on June 4, , the son of Frederick, Prince of Wales, and his wife, Augusta of Saxe-Gotha. Frederick died on March 20, , and George II, Georges grandfather, bestowed Fredericks title upon twelve-year-old George a month later. On October 25, , he succeeded George II as king of Great Britain and Ireland, duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, and prince-elector of Hanover. He was the third ruler in the royal British house of Hanover, a Germanic dynasty that had come to the English throne in , but the first to be born in England.
